The day after the Wales excursion we went up north a bit to Liverpool where we had a wonderful guided trip throughout the town. Our guide is one of the five licensed Beatles Guides; Phil. Phil has met the two surviving Beatles and also knows many other famous people. We had a great time. Highlights include a trip down Penny Lane (With Penny Lane playing in the background), the Cavern on Saint Matthews Street (where the Beatles first played together), the bank and the barbershop mentioned in the song Penny Lane, the school where Paul and George went to school (paul now owns it and has set up an art performance school where people do not learn to read music), and we saw the two cathedrals. The Catholic Cathedral was very modern. Blech. The Anglican Cathedral was huge and beautiful. It was built during the 20th century but with gothic aesthetics.
After our wonderful tour around Liverpool we headed north again to Scotland. Mom had to be in the front seat, of course. She was wonderfully excited about this portion of the trip. You all should have seen her face! We stayed at a grand hotel next to the ruins of the Airth Castle. The ruins themselves are a bit hard to see, but the hotel was beautiful. We have pictures. We went up to Loch Lomand for a few hours just to say that we were in the Highlands. It really looks like Colorado. Think about the Maroon Bells and Estes Park combined. Everything was very green. The cattle (Highland Cows) were very hairy. They looked like Yaks with really long horns.
Before driving intot he Highlands we spent a couple of hours in Edinburgh. The shopping was great! We were quite rushed however. The entire city was covered in a wonderful mist. I guess it's called the Soft. We loved the rain and the fog. It was appropriate. Did you know that Universities were free in Scotland? The summers would be great but the winters would really stink.

Otherwise, everything sounds lovely!! I bet the "Soft" is just wonderful -- cozy and appropriate. I can't wait to see pictures of everything!

Apparently Paul McCartney was not accepted as a member of some choir in one of the churches because he couldn't read music.
The classes at this school are 24 hours a day. Big names fly in to teach master classes at all hours.
